Today Greece kicked off its colorful and festive carnival season with “TsiknoPempti”—literally smoky Thursday. Lent begins in 10 days but today, Greeks celebrate and eat meat, lots of it.

The streets in Athens today smelled like souvlaki, lamb chops, sausages, chicken.

All over town Athenians pulled out the grills right in the street in front of restaurants, homes, shops, cafes, even in parking garages. Mini parties broke out, people danced, and the barbecuers treated passersby to morsels of tasty sausage.

The festivities continue until Clean Mondy, the first day of Lent, on April 18.
