Following Athens Mayor Haris Doukas’s proposal, the city’s Municipality Council unanimously decided on Wednesday to erect a monument in remembrance of the victims of the railway accident at Tempi.

“A year or more after the tragedy, the Municipality of Athens, respecting those who perished and their families, wishes to honor their memory and join all those who demand the serving of justice and a safe and just state. […] Therefore, we pledge to create a monument that will honor the memory of our fellow citizens and maintain in continuity the principles of truth, justice, and security,” stated Doukas.

The selection of the monument’s location and design will be made collaboratively with relevant municipal authorities, in consultation with the association representing the victims’ families, following a preliminary meeting.

The municipal sanitation workers’ union of the city requested that it contribute financially to the monument’s construction as a gesture of respect.
