“Our position is clear: any change in in internationally recognised borders through the use of military force is contrary to the United Nations charter and therefore not acceptable,” the Greek foreign ministry said on Saturday, in an announcement marking two years since the start of the war in Ukraine.

“Today marks the completion of two years since the illegal Russian attack on Ukraine, which has led to the loss of thousands of lives and incalculable destruction,” the message said. It stressed that Greece steadfastly stands with the brave Ukrainian people as they struggle for the independence and sovereignty of their country, adding: “Our support for the government and people of Ukraine is unflagging and sincere.”

The foreign ministry emphasised that respect for the territorial integrity, national sovereignty and independence of all nations, while refraining from the use of force or the threat of the use of force in international relations, were fundamental principles of international law and non-negotiable values of Greek foreign policy.

It also stressed that Greece does not forget the victims of the Russian attacks and the destruction inflicted on Mariupol, where thriving Greek communities have lived for centuries.

It concluded by stressing Greece’s determination “to continue supporting Ukraine in its just, defensive struggle.”
