The recent incident of migrants pushed out of Turkey toward Greece at the Evros borders “is yet another attempt by Turkey to instrumentalize the migration and refugee issue, and possibly create a border issue as well,” the Greek Foreign Affairs Ministry said on Wednesday.

The ministry was referring to a group of 38 migrants trapped for days on an islet in the Turkish side of Evros River in NE Greece before entering the country. According to their testimony, they were encouraged by Turkish military police to enter Greek territory, where they were eventually picked up.

“Before this new attempt against our national interests, all political forces in our country need to show prudence instead of trying to turn this issue into a fighting arena, as some of the opposition parties are trying to do,” the ministry concluded in its statement.
