Fire breaks out on the island of Andros: Firefighting forces reinforced

Fire fighters are battling a blaze which broke out in the area Remata on the island of Andros, in the northern Cyclades, the fire department said on Sunday.

Two settlements – Remata and Ateni – have been evacuated.

The efforts are hampered by the strong winds blowing in the area. Fifteen firemen with five vehicles, two firefighting aircraft and ground units have been dispatched in the area.

At an order of Deputy Civil Protection, Nikos Chardalias, a unit of the Arson Crimes Directorate will go to the island to investigate the causes of the large fire. Meanwile, 55 firemen with 15 vehicles, three firefighting aircraft, two helicopters and ground units have been dispatched in the area.
