The government will set up a new ministry of Migration and Asylum, government spokesperson Stelios Petsas announced on Wednesday.

Panagiotis Mitarachi has been appointed Minister of Migration and Asylum. Giorgos Koumoutsakos has been appointed Alternate Minister of Migration and Asylum.

As Petsas announced, “the government, from the first moment, followed a different policy on the refugee-migration issue. With a comprehensive plans based on four axes:

– Guarding the borders.

– Speeding up asylum procedures.

– Increased returns.

– Closed pre-departure centres.

This was done at the same time as ensuring the decongestion of the islands, which carry the greatest burden with respect to the reception of refugees and migrants, while “internationalising the problem at all international forums,” Petsas said.

“What is needed is a faster implementation of this plan. By decision of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, a Migration and Asylum ministry is being set up with Chios MP Panagiotis Mitarachi as the minister,” he added.
