“We need a fair European migration system” says Parliament president Nikos Voutsis

Parliament President Nikos Voutsis, in a letter to the president of the European parliament Antonio Tajani, stressed the need for a sustainable European system on migration, with a fair allocation of responsibilities in the management of migration that accorded with the principle of solidarity.

Voutsis was responding to a letter from Tajani and the rapporteur on reforming the Dublin Regulation, Cecilia Wikstr?m, ahead of the European Council summit that will focus on the refugee and migration issue.

He described as extremely important the position of the European Parliament in favor of the establishment of a permanent, automatic and compulsory redistribution mechanism, as well as the support of the member-state of first entry. Furthermore, Voutsis expressed his support “for the success of the efforts made to reach a common agreement on such an important issue.” “The migration crisis has undoubtedly put the EU Member States in an extremely difficult position – and by extension the EU institutions – making it imperative to revise the Common European Asylum System.”
