Antonio Taquis Ochoa, the former ambassador of Panama to Greece and a Panama-based banker and businessman, talked about the strengthening of relations between Greece and Latin American countries during a session at the 9th Economic Forum of Delphi.

In a discussion with journalist Maria Nikoltsiou, Taquis, the general manager and owner of the Panama Shipping Company, spoke about the improvement of Greece’s relations with many Latin American countries, such as Costa Rica and others, as a result of the establishment of the embassy in Panama, which is expected to open later this year. At the same time, he also talked about the actions of the Greek expatriate community in its efforts to establish the embassy.

In his comments, Taquis highlighted the importance of the new embassy for the Greek shipping fleet since 25% of the fleet passes through the Panama Canal. The Greek embassy in Panama has a significant geostrategic importance for Greece’s relationship with all of Latin America. The embassy in Panama will also cover eight other nearby countries. He specifically mentioned Costa Rica, where he said that although the Greek community only encompasses 300 Greeks, it held, for the first time, an event to commemorate Greek Independence Day. There is great interest in solidifying and building Greek-Costa Rican trade relations.

Finally, Taquis underlined that Greece should see Panama as a beacon of diplomatic hope for the region. Latin Americans, he noted, have many commonalities that unite them with Greeks, in particular the respect they have for ancient Greek culture.

In closing, he said the embassy opening is important to him, as it was his late father’s wish. The official opening will take place in the summer.
