Commuters will face a difficult day in Athens on Wednesday, February 28, after successive public transport staff unions announced strike action to coincide with a strike by the civil servants’ union federation ADEDY on the same day.

The strikes are expected to affect buses, trains, taxis, the Athens metro and also flights, due to strike action by air-traffic controllers.

Athens buses and trolleys have announced work stoppages from the start of their shift until 9:00 and from 21:00 until the end of the shift, with normal services resuming after 10:00 and last buses leaving the depots at 20:00.

There will be a 24-hour nationwide railway staff strike that will include the Proastiakos suburban railway line in Athens and Thessaloniki, which will also coincide with the one-year anniversary since the lethal train crash at Tempi, which claimed 57 lives, including those of the drivers.

A 24-hour strike by air-traffic controllers on Wednesday is set to immobilise flights to and from Greek airports, while the SATA taxi owners union has declared a 48-hour strike on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Athens metro and tram will likewise be affected by strikes, with seven fixed-rail transport staff unions having announced 24-hour strikes on Wednesday.

In an announcement on Monday, Aegean and Olympic Air said that passengers on flights likely to be cancelled can proceed to change their tickets without additional cost or paying the difference in fares.

Ships scheduled to depart from the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio on Wednesday are to remain docked in ports after four seamen’s unions announced their decision to hold a 24-hour strike, joining the civil servants’ union federation ADEDY.

The strike will begin at 00:01 on Wednesday morning and end at midnight the same day. The unions are demanding resolution of labour and pension issues, as well as substantial pay increases and action against high prices.
