A couple from Spain who had been in quarantine after testing positive to the novel coronavirus, were arrested at a party on Mykonos island on Wednesday night for possession of drugs.

Police raided the party at a private villa as part of stepped-up efforts on popular islands to contain the spread of the virus. Mykonos, along with Halkidiki peninsula, will come under stricter preventative measures as of Friday morning (06:00), with obligatory wearing of a facial mask, social distancing and a ban on gatherings of more than 9 people.

Greek traffic police dispatched to the island have also fined several car rental companies that do not follow safety rules (e.g. renting cars with worn tires) as well as residents of Mykonos who provide illegal rides with their private cars for pay. From August 10 to 19, police found 49 violations of unregistered use of 39 cars and vans and another 47 for several other reasons including crowded cars, lack of seat belt use, use of cellphone while driving, illegal parking and such. They confiscated 4 drivers’ licenses, 20 circulation permits and 31 car and van plates.

Mykonos policing is about to get an upgrade, with a new division chief on the island who has already assumed duties, while a 100 police and traffic police officers have been dispatched from Attica to the popular island. In addition, Greek police headquarters said that Mykonos and Halkidiki security would also include plainclothes police.

The Spanish couple, which was found after its arrest to have violated its quarantine, was led before the local prosecutor on Thursday.
