Staff on the Athens metro (lines 2 and 3) and the capital’s trams announced a work stoppage starting at 21:00 on Monday evening until the end of the day’s shifts.

  • Their unions, in an announcement on Sunday, said the strike action was called in protest against the continued actions to degrade the infrastructure and resources of fixed-rail public transport “as is shown by a tragic shortage of supplies, parts, consumables and staff.”

“We ask that the political leadership of the transport and finance ministries come up with answers and solutions in order to fully ensure the unhampered provision of transport services that are affordable to citizens, so that the rail network remains safe and reliable for passengers while retaining the form of a social good, as it should be in every civilised state,” the announcement adds, expressing the workforce’s opposition to a “policy of neglect, breaking up and selling off public urban transport at knock-off prices.”
