New Defence Min Apostolakis calls on Greece’s neighbours to make Balkans a region of stability

Newly appointed Defence Minister Evangelos Apostolakis on Tuesday called on Greece’s neighbours “to work with us to get the Balkans out of the corner and onto the international stage, as a region that can guarantee security, stability and peace.”

Apostolakis made the statement during the handover ceremony at the ministry, as he took over from his predecessor.

He also made it clear that “we are firmly committed to the values of peaceful coexistence and co-operation”, and urged Turkey to choose: “There is the way of conflict and the path of cooperation. I want to remind our neighbours that, whenever cooperation and trust prevail, our peoples have progressed. However, when nationalism has dominated, people suffered. Respect for international law must be the foundation for our relations and that is the only ‘red’ line in our relationship,” he clarified.

Furthermore, Apostolakis asked the political parties and the people to proceed united and determined, leaving the army out of any disagreements.
