First lawsuit by family members of the Attica wildfire victims was filed with Athens prosecutor




Family members of two people killed in the deadly July 23 wildfires in eastern Attica on Wednesday initiated legal proceedings against the officials and services responsible, filing the first lawsuit by relatives of the fire’s victims with the Athens first-instance court prosecutors’ department.

The lawsuit was filed by the lawyer Antonis Foussas, representing three relatives of two victims that lost a husband, father and mother, respectively.

The lawsuit was filed against the Secretary-General for Civil Protection Yiannis Kapakis, Attica region governor Rena Dourou, Marathon Mayor Ilias Psinakis, the heads of civil protection bureaus in the Attica regional authority and Marathon municipality, the fire brigade officers in charge of eastern Attica, police officers in charge of eastern Attica and all other parties responsible for the tragic events.

The suit asks that they be charged with repeated counts of criminal endangerment, homicide through negligence, burning forests through negligence, bodily harm and any other offences that may arise during the investigation.

One of the two victims in the fire was a 70-year-old former teacher, who was killed in the family’s summer house in Neos Voutzas and the second victim was a 73-year-old woman, also a teacher, who had rented the apartment below.
