The Chief of the Hellenic Police (ELAS) Dimitris Mallios, emphasized the absolute commitment of the police to combat sports violence and overall lawlessness. “ We will continue to work with plan and determination for the safety of citizens and peaceful coexistence in our society,” he stressed in a statement regarding the operation conducted on Monday to arrest people involved in the deadly naval light bullet attack against the 31st-year-old MAT police officer, George Lygherides, on December 7, 2023, in Renti.

As the Chief of the ELAS pointed out, in recent months, an extensive investigation has been conducted under strict secrecy, which revealed the existence of a criminal organization behind the attack. He confirmed the correlation of sports violence with organized crime.

According to Mallios, sixty individuals have been arrested so far, while searches have been conducted in fifty-eight houses and fifteen vehicles. At the same time, the case file formed includes evidence of a criminal organization consisting of 158 members, which mainly operated in Attica, Volos, and Ioannina.
