“I was in Odessa with President Zelenskiy yesterday when a ballistic missile hit the port. I think we all have a message for the Kremlin: We will not be afraid, we will continue to support Ukraine and its brave citizens for as long as it takes.

And we remain united on this issue,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday, addressing the European People’s Party (EPP) Congress in Bucharest.

He also emphasised that the EPP must remain the dominant force in European politics. “We must ensure that nothing will be done in Europe without the active participation of the EPP,” he stressed.
“We should be very proud of what we have achieved in the last five years. It was not a given, we fought a lot,” Mitsotakis added, and personally congratulated Ursula von der Leyen for her contribution in what he called “extremely difficult times”.
The Greek prime minister referred to the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and the energy crisis which, he noted, posed risks to the stability of the economy.
Speaking about the Recovery Fund, he pointed out that these funds were being used in the best way, for digital transformation, for the green transition and to enhance social cohesion.
“We showed our support to Ukraine in a way that was surprising to some of our enemies,” Mitsotakis added. He noted that Europe has never shown such a response, with the sanctions on Russia and with the support of Ukraine militarily and financially.
“No violation of international law and no attempt to change borders by force will be accepted by our political family,” declared the Greek prime minister, who also described what happened during his visit to Ukraine on Wednesday.
He also said that Greece was the positive surprise of the eurozone, achieving high growth rates without upsetting fiscal balances, while noting that “we could not have achieved this without significant European support.”
