Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis began the daily press briefing on Thursday by referring to the prime minister’s official visit to India, which – as he said – stressed Greece’s important role in strengthening relations between India and Europe, as well as the prospects for closer business relations.

Marinakis also referred to the education ministry’s bill on changes in higher education and the establishment of non-state, non-profit universities in Greece, which is being tabled in Parliament on Thursday. The spokesperson explained that the criteria established by the bill for such universities are the strictest in all of Europe.

He pointed out that all universities are to be evaluated, while adding that some 40,000 Greeks are currently studying abroad, which is a much higher number than those leaving to study abroad in other countries, noting that the equivalent number was 35,000 in Spain and 13,000 in Portugal.

He also said that the ministry’s bill for the modernisation of the criminal code is expected to be voted on in Parliament last the same day.

Marinakis announced that 9,300 applications to vote by post have been submitted so far by Greeks living in 19 countries abroad and stressed that “we are strengthening the legislative tools for the unobstructed participation of all persons in the European elections.”
