Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou heard traditional Greek New Year’s carols (kalanda) from several groups at the Presidential Mansion on Sunday, New Year’s Eve.

The Armed Forces band and the presidential guard performed first, followed by members of Greek-based UniquALL organization that empowers neurodiverse children on the autism spectrum through sports. The latter group is founded by baskeball veteran Dimitris Papanikolaou, who attended along with his fellow-athlete Theodoros Papaloukas who founded Eurohoops Academy and Alternate Health Minister Eirini Agapidaki.

Sakellaropoulou also heard kalanda from her region of origin in Thrace by the Panthracian Federation of Southern Greece, and a choir of the homeless at the UNESCO Club of the Department of Piraeus and Islands. The latter was accompanied by State Deputy Georgios Stamatis, who has served as New Democracy’s secretary general for social solidarity and fight against poverty.

Other groups also singing for her were the global association of people originating in Mani (southern Greece), the Federation of Chanting Associations of Greece, and the Ukrainian children’s school in Athens ‘Beregynia’. The event wrapped up with performances by the Panepirot Confederation of Greece and the Municipal Philharmonic Orchestra of Amfilochia (NW Greece).
