Firefighting efforts continue in Evros; very high threat of fire on Saturday, Fire Brigade says

FILE PHOTO: Greek and foreign firefighters operate during a wildfire at Dadia forest, Thrace, northern Greece, 24 August 2023. Greek and foreign firefighters and volunteers, along with land and air assistance, battled for a sixth day to contain and put out the large fire in the natural habitat of the Dadia Forest. The forest has suffered extensive damage and it is feared that Black Vultures (Aegypius monachus) that live in the forest along with another 35 species of birds of prey will be greatly affected. The smoke that has covered the area has made assessment of the damage impossible. The Fire Brigade continued to fight the fires in Evros for 14th consecutive day on Friday evening, focusing their efforts overnight to prevent fires reaching Soufli.

According to the Fire Brigade, firefighters in the NE Greek region are focused on areas between Soufli, Kornofolias, Dadia Forest, Kotronia, Sidiro, and Yiannouli.

A 112 message on Thursday night alerted residents of Soufli of a possible evacuation, but so far the danger has been averted, although conditions are still unstable due to rekindlings.

Earlier briefings said that 129 fire engines with a 586-member crew, 16 teams of firefighters on foot assisted by 6 firefighting aircraft and 2 helicopters are operating in the area, with water-dumping flights postponed for daybreak. Additional forces from EU countries and Albania, as well as Armed Forces, police, and firefighting volunteers are also assisting.

  • A total of 44 new forest fires broke out on Thursday while the firefighting forces were battling 81 fires throughout the country.

In Parnitha Mountain, firefighting forces continued their efforts near Fyli Fortress.

A very high threat of fire was forecast on Saturday, particularly in the Regions of Attica, Central Greece (Boeotia, Evia and Skyros islands), East Macedonia and Thrace (Evros), and North Aegean (Lesvos, Chios, Samos and Ikaria islands).
