Mitsotakis: The result of the ballot box is not a given

“In no way do I consider that the result of the ballot box is a given,” the leader of New Democracy (ND) Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in an interview with SKAI TV on Friday.
That is why he invited all citizens to go to the polls, pointing out that the result of May 21 does not count.
“My appeal is for everyone to exercise their right to vote again,” he stressed and added: “Unfortunately citizens are obliged to go to the polls again, and I am sorry that the new Parliament may not be pluralist even if many parties enter.”
The goal is a comfortable functional majority, he pointed out, refuting assertions of his “arrogance” and “omnipotence” in governance if he gets a high percentage.
“The greater the mandate of the people, the greater the responsibility and the demands,” he reiterated.
He spoke once again about rotation, noting that there are “no permanent ministers”, adding that even the ministers who will remain in the cabinet will have different portfolios, while some may be “put on the bench”.
Mitsotakis said that the government will work during the summer months, and even during the holidays.
He talked about health and the necessary changes that will be initiated, admitting that there are hospitals in regional areas that are not functioning properly. Mitsotakis spoke of a series of changes that will be initiated immediately with the aim of always meeting the needs of the citizens, free of charge.
He emphasised the value of preventive medical screening and the implementation of prevention programmes.
ND’s president also spoke about interventions that will be made that will prioritise support for civil servants with children, while offering assurances that all the things announced in his programme for the private sector will also be carried out.
He reiterated that, over a four-year horizon, the minimum wage will reach 950 euros. He added that the fight against tax evasion is also a high priority.
As for tourism, he said that “our tourism is at risk from overexploitation and permit-less construction,” adding that the law was applied in Mykonos and that the law applies to everyone, especially the powerful.
Regarding arms purchases and the policy of strengthening the armed forces, he pointed out that the programme will continue as Greece is primarily a defensive force.
In response to a question about Erdogan, he said the Turkish president had no business telling Greece how it should arm itself. He was explicit about what the topic of discussion with Erdogan was, as regards its geopolitical dimension.
Regarding his vision, Mitsotakis said that he wants Greece to play a leading role in important sectors and that his priorities are to increase wages to European levels and reduce inequalities.
He cited the unity and harmony of society as basic conditions for progress.
Finally, he stressed: “On Sunday, the responsibility passes to the people,” adding that he has great confidence in the judgment of the Greek people.
