You cannot borrow something that has been stolen from you, SYRIZA says on Parthenon Marbles

“The main point of our concern is not so much the concern regarding the use of an issue of national and global cultural importance in a pre-election communication.

The concern stems from reports over the last few days in the British press that speak of a loan or an exchange,” main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras said on Saturday in a meeting with the Bureau of the Association of Greek Archaeologists (SEA), and with a delegation of the Union of Employees of the Ministry of Culture of Attica, Mainland and Islands.

At the meeting held at the offices of the Association of Greek Archaeologists, the leader of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance underlined that “this is outside of any context and moral as well as legal dimension”.

“Because,” he stressed, “the position of the Greek democracy is clearly and explicitly formulated in all international fora and especially in UNESCO by all the Greek governments over the last decades. This position is that we do not recognize in any state or any legal entity, such as the British Museum, any right, let alone ownership, to the illegally detached, stolen sculptures of the Parthenon.”

He added that it must be immediately clarified that no one will move outside the country’s firm position.
