Τα φετινά βραβεία ανακοίνωσε το W. Eugene Smith Fund και ένα από τα σημαντικότερα φωτογραφικά βραβεία στον κόσμο, το Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography, δόθηκε στον Ουκρανό Maxim Dondyuk για το πρότζεκτ του «Ukraine 2014/22».
Από την ίδρυσή του το 1979, το Smith Fund έχει δώσει πάνω από 1,3 εκατομμύρια δολάρια σε φωτογράφους που ακολουθούν την παράδοση του θρυλικού φωτογράφου W. Eugene Smith και ο Maxim Dondyuk θα χρησιμοποιήσει τα 40.000 δολάρια του βραβείου για να συνεχίσει να καταγράφει τον αυτοπροσδιορισμό της Ουκρανίας ως ανεξάρτητης χώρας.
Συνοψίζοντας το πρότζεκτ του, ο Dondyuk λέει:
«Το “Ukraine 2014/22” είναι ένα χρονικό του μακροχρόνιου αγώνα της Ουκρανίας για την πραγματική ανεξαρτησία της, την εθνική ταυτότητα και την ελευθερία της, η οποία ανέκαθεν ήταν εύθραυστο ζήτημα. Τον χειμώνα του 2013-14, οι Ουκρανοί δήλωσαν την πλήρη άρνησή τους να αποτελούν μέρος της πρώην Σοβιετικής αυτοκρατορίας, η οποία καταρρέει και προσπαθεί να αποκατασταθεί μέσω βίας, εκβιασμών και πολιτικών παιχνιδιών. Αυτά γίνονται η αρχή του τέλους. Επί σχεδόν μια δεκαετία έχω καταγράψει πολλές πλευρές της αντιπαράθεσης Ρωσίας και Ουκρανίας, φωτογραφίζοντας τη σύγκρουση και από τις δύο πλευρές – την Ουκρανική Επανάσταση, την προσάρτηση της Κριμαίας, το ξεκίνημα του πολέμου στην ανατολική Ουκρανία».
