The Mitsotakis government is the first one that took very important steps in order to create a national security system in Greece, government spokesperson Yiannis Economou said during a press briefing on Tuesday and referred to specific initiatives.
He also referred to what is happening in other countries such as Germany, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Poland but also South Zealand, Canada, Britain and the USA in relation to the national security services.
“If we want to be honest and not daydreaming, we have to accept that the democracy through institutional safeguards protects and secures itself,” Economou underlined.
He also said that the handling of the Androulakis case showed that improvements are needed, pointing out that there is no legal error in this handling. He also referred to the four areas of change announced by the prime minister and which the government will promote.
Responding to a question about the conditions that must exist for the National Intelligence Service (EYP) to carry out legal surveillance of persons, government spokesman Yiannis Economou said that the legal framework has been clear since 1994 and does not exclude anyone, adding that the evaluation of information by the leadership of the service is followed by the approval of a prosecutor.
He also stressed that both the Predator software and any other malware are not used by the government or any of its services, and that the government has not procured any malware.
“No authority uses these softwares. Attempted surveillance is an unpleasant reality in Europe and we must find ways to protect ourselves against this threat,” Economou said.
The government spokesman also ruled out the possibility of this issue causing governmental instability.
