A fire broke out 1km away from the historic town of Distomo on Friday, and firefighters as well as nearby residents were trying to prevent its spreading to an olive grove and from there to the nearby residences.

Deputy Mayor Panagiotis Dimakas, who is at the fire front with Mayor Yiannis Stathas and volunteers, called the situation “critical” and said that the area on fire in western Boeotia is not easily accessible, while help by air is hindered by strong winds and the terrain. The firemen are being assisted by colleagues from other areas in Central Greece, he added.
