Greece’s Ambassador to Algeria, Georgios Zaharioudakis, has been appointed as the special envoy of the Greek foreign ministry for Libyan issues, replacing Ambassador Christodoulos Lazaris, the foreign ministry announced on Tuesday.

The appointment of a special envoy for Libyan issues proves Greece’s active interest in neighbouring Libya, with which Greece has long and historic ties, the announcement.

Greece is one of the first countries that re-opened its embassy in Tripolis in February 2021 and the first country that re-opened the general consulate in Benghazi in May 2021.

As the ministry announcement said, Greece will continue to work, in collaboration and coordination with the international community, for peace and stability in Libya for the benefit of the Libyan people and the wider region.
