There was a resumption of tension along the Greek-Turkish borders in Evros from Tuesday afternoon after the peace that prevailed in the last days, authorities said on Wednesday.

Sources told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency that there had been organised action aimed at the violation of the borders in the area of Kastanies and at other points in the southern part of Evros.
Specifically, on Tuesday afternoon at the border post of Kastanies, a group of approximately 100 migrants and refugees attempted to break through the fence and enter Greek territory.

Greek police stationed in the area pushed them back but there was a second attempt between 2:30 and 3:30 on Wednesday, involving the use of tear gas thrown with a tear gas grenade launcher. According to the same sources, this indicates that the attacks are very likely organised and incited.

At the same time, in the southern part of Evros and specifically in the wider region of Feres, Greek police and army personnel deployed along the border foiled repeated attempts by small groups of migrants to find entry points across the borders amid the steadily increasing presence, since Clean Monday, of Turkish military forces in the area.

Despite the flare-ups of tension and clashes on the borderline, works to further reinforce the existing fence are continuing normally, Greek authorities said.
