Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura submitted her letter of resignation to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in order to dedicate her efforts to her race as a candidate for the European Parliament. In the letter, she warmly thanked the prime minister for the trust he has shown in her.

  • “In our joint course since January 2015, our government led Greece out of the crisis and tourism has played a key role in achieving this goal in the national development effort,” she said.

Kountoura made a mini-account of her work at the Ministry of Tourism: “With a targeted tourism strategy, we have managed to establish Greece as one of the world’s leading destinations and have gained international recognition as a model for tourism development.

“We have ensured the continuous growth of tourism in the past four years at rates that are double the world average.

  • “We have promoted tourism as a driving force for the economy and society, which has contributed to revenue growth, created thousands of new jobs, attracted new investments, and brought a new prospect for the future.
  • “I thank all those who have contributed to this great success in tourism, the ministers, my colleagues, the staff of the tourism ministry and the National Greek Tourism Organisation, the professionals and employees in the tourism sector and everyone in the industry who has done their best all these years so that Greece stands out for its high level of hospitality.

“These European elections are very critical for Europe’s course and Greece’s voice must be heard more loudly. Our country should have a strong representation in the European Parliament. I will continue to work with the same passion as I did to make Greece a world champion in tourism… in order to make Greece a champion in Europe.”
