German spokesman Seibert: Prespes Agreement a historic opportunity to settle the name issue

Germany hails the historic opportunity offered by the Prespes Agreement to potentially settle the name issue between Greece and FYROM and thus open the way for new opportunities in the region, German government spokesman, Steffen Seibert, told journalists during a press briefing.

Germany has repeatedly expressed its support on the matter, Seibert said, but stressed that his comments should not be linked to domestic political affairs in Greece.

He then referred to the forthcoming visit of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday, during which the latter will hold meetings with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras; Greek President Prokopios Pavlopoulos; main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis; as well as representatives from the economic and cultural sectors and from the civil society.

“Our contacts and discussions with the Greek government are intensive and frequent,” Seibert said, adding that “we have the chance to meet on various occasions but it is good that the Chancellor will again visit Athens.”
