Alternate Shipping Minister Santorinios: Transport equivalence is now a reality

The transport equivalence, a measure seeking to match sea transport cost with that of overland transport, is now a reality for the islands, Alternate Shipping Minister Nektarios Santorinios said on Thursday in his statement from the port of Kyllini.

The programme was applied on an experimental basis from July 1 to December 31, 2018 for residents and businesses on islands connected to the mainland and major ports by infrequent transport; it also included cargo tranport to specifically named islands.

Santorinios said that as of January 2019, subsidies will be provided for tickets of island residents, but mainly for cargo. He also expressed the hope that “as of January 1, 2020 following an experimental application on some small islands, there will be subsidy on fuel for the Ionian Islands.” He also said that the e-register for vessels, a project of the Shipping Ministry expected to be completed soon, will be a great innovation.
