Athens was on Tuesday declared Innovation Capital 2018. The announcement was made at a special event in Lisbon in the presence of Athens Mayor George Kaminis.

“We have shown that things can be done differently, through partnerships with the participation of civil society and with a plan for the city,” Athens Mayor George Kaminis said in an exclusive statement to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA).

“This prize belongs to everyone, especially to those citizens of Athens who worked with the municipality to overcome the crisis and, since the prize winner is the capital, it belongs to the whole of Greece,” he added.

Other candidates were Toulouse (France), Hamburg (Germany), Lueven (Belgium), Umeo (Sweden), and Aarhus (Denmark).
