“Only after completing constitutional revision can FYROM join NATO” says Pavlopoulos

Only after FYROM has revised its constitution and it is shown that the revision includes all agreed guarantees, will FYROM be asked to join NATO, Greek President Prokopios Pavlopoulos said on Thursday, addressing Greek students from the United States participating in the Hospitality Program of the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad.

Pavlopoulos noted that this had also been made clear by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

The Greek president said that Greece supports FYROM’s prospects of joining NATO and the EU but with a significant precondition: a prior resolution of the name issue based on history and international law.

In order to make this happen – as Greece has made clear in a position that was also accepted by the EU, NATO and the United Nations – Greece’s northern neighbour must make the necessary changes to its laws and, above all, to its constitution, Pavlopoulos said. He underlined that FYROM’s constitution, as it presently stands, does not – under any circumstances – meet these conditions.
