Traffic was building up on roads exiting the Greek capital on Thursday, as motorists started heading out of Athens to celebrate the Easter holidays in the villages and the countryside.

According to the Attica traffic police, speeds were slow on Athinon Avenue from Palataki to the Aspropyrgos refineries and on Schistou Avenue toward Skaramangas. There was also heavy traffic on the Attiki Odos highway and the Hymettus Ring Road in the lanes toward Elefsina, as well as on Kifissos Avenue.

Motorists were experiencing delays at the Elefsina tolls, with heavy traffic building up until Kinetta, while no problems had been reported on the Athens-Lamia highway.

The departure for Easter was expected to reach a peak in the next few hours.

According to official figures released by the traffic police, in the hours between 6:00 on Wednesday and 6:00 on Thursday, a total of 47,343 vehicles went through the tolls heading toward Corinth and another 35,485 left in the direction of Lamia. In the equivalent period in 2023, 44,430 cars had departed toward Corinth and 34,968 toward Lamia.

From 15:00 and until 22:00 on Thursday and from 6:00 until 16:00 on Orthodox Good Friday, trucks weighing more than 3.5 tonnes are forbidden from using the outward bound lanes.
