The ninth Greek Film Festival in Berlin got underway Wednesday night with the sold out screening of “The Murderess,” a 2013 film based on the novel of Alexandros Papadiamantis. More than 500 people attended.

“We sold out two and a half weeks ago,” said Sophia Stavrianidou, the festival’s director. “That is the first time in the festival that that had happened.”

The film’s director, Eva Nathena, and one of its producers, Costas Lambropoulos were in attendance, as were representatives from the embassy of Greece and Cyprus in Berlin.

Nathena took questions from the audience about her tough film starring Karofyllia Karabeti. She explained that she was particularly proud that so many young people have connected with the film. “I think it is because of the unexplained anger that they feel,” she said, and that “gives us hope.”

The festival continues through March 24 with the theme, “We Choose the Bloody Big Screen” at the historic Babylon theater, built in 1928, a famed independent movie house in the city.  It includes documentary, short films, and emerging artists competitions. The festival closes on Sunday, March 24, with the film, “The Summer of Carmen.”
