The First-Instance Court Prosecutor’s Office ordered on Friday an urgent preliminary investigation on sit-ins at Greek universities.

Head of the Prosecutor’s Office Antonis Eleftherianos ordered that investigation focuses on two issues: responsibilities of those carrying out sit-ins, and those of university authorities for not taking actions to avert them.

Sit-ins at Greek universities are protesting plans to found the first officially recognized private universities in Greece. The protests have raised concerns among students and their parents that upcoming examinations will be jeopardized, while the education minister has urged academic authorities to hold finals for the semester online.

Eleftherianos ordered chief prosecutor of the first-instance courts Nikolaos Margaritis to investigate whether any acts were committed that can be prosecuted ex officio, such as those related to disturbing a public administration service, use of violence, and breach of duty.

Besides those organizing and carrying out sit-ins, the prosecutors will examine any criminal liabilities by academic administrators in terms of actions they took or did not take to resolve sit-ins. Subjected to the same scrutiny will also be boards of managers at universities where sit-ins are taking place, as related to their obligations.

Margaritis is expected to start very soon by summoning the first witnesses, including representatives of academic administrators.
