“It was absolutely clear that our position on the return of the Parthenon Marbles would be discussed and heard,” government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said on Wednesday, speaking on Antenna TV, calling the British side’s claims regarding this issue “inaccurate”.

Referring to whether the UK government had asked for a low-key approach regarding this issue, the government spokesperson said that “there was no discussion about not presenting the standing Greek positions. Because we are talking about a very important Greek position. There are some issues that are not subject to negotiation.”

The government spokesperson also referred to the upcoming visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Athens, and noted that Greece believes in dialogue, both in general and specifically with Turkey, but made it clear that the “red lines in our sovereign rights” will not be discussed in this dialogue.

Referring to the expectations from Erdogan’s visit, he said that “what we want is to continue capturing this improved better climate, to formulate our positions clearly, to continue discussing very important issues, such as migration, and to take an important step in a series of steps to be taken”.

Marinakis underlined that there is much that still needs to be done, but “certainly, if one projects where we were a few months ago, a few years ago and where we are today, we are definitely at a better level.”

Referring to the tax bill, he said that it was an intervention against tax evasion, and noted that the goal is 500 to 600 million euros for a fairer taxation system for freelancers.
