Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Stefanos Kasselakis on Wednesday joined freelance professionals protesting against the government’s proposed tax reforms, saying the government had lied to them about its intentions prior to the elections.

“[SYRIZA-PA] wants fair taxation and dignity for all freelance professionals and SMEs,” Kasselakis said in statements at the protest march outside the finance ministry.

“It is clear to everyone that [Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis] lied before the elections. He is increasing taxes, he is increasing contributions…he supposedly lauds the investment grade and the fiscal situation in the country and now presents the ‘bill’ to the people who do not deserve such an injustice,” Kasselakis said.

He noted that the era when SYRIZA had been in power had been one of memorandums, in which adopting a leftist stance was “extremely difficult”, but stressed that this era was now over. “This why Alexis Tsipras had said before the elections this year, in 2023, ‘let us be the Left for the first time’,” he added. He also stressed that “horizontal measures are unfair” and pointed to the hundreds of millions of euros, earmarked for flood protection works in Thessaly, that have gone missing.
