Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Stefanos Kasselakis, who was on a visit to Cyprus, was received by the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Mansion in Nicosia on Wednesday.

After the meeting, Kasselakis spoke of “an extremely productive discussion,” in which they talked about several issues in depth.

Kasselakis underlined that from the first moment of becoming main opposition leader, he had considered it his duty to make his first trip abroad a visit to Cyprus. He emphasised his party’s strong support for the resumption of talks (with Turkiye) as soon as possible, in the context of UN decisions, from where they left off at Crans Montana in 2017. Talks aiming at a bizonal-bicommunal federation in the interest of all the island’s residents, both Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots, without guarantees and without occupation troops.

He also pointed out the “support we offer to the President and his initiatives for the appointment of a UN mediator, as well as for EU’s active role for a fair and sustainable solution of the Cyprus issue.”

Kasselakis said they had also discussed international developments  “and on our part I noted the importance that we attach to coordination and cooperation between Greece and Cyprus.” He underlined that “we have seen this also in recent years, with the 3+1 scheme as well as the Conference of the EU South, which have borne fruit,” he added.

“Additionally, in the coordination part, something that is very important is the Greek Diaspora and it is something that I personally but also institutionally will seek to promote during my upcoming visit to the USA”, Kasselakis said.

Regarding Greek-Turkish dialogue, Kasselakis said that “it was an unexpected development but it should be clear in Turkiye that actions such as the ones in Varosha and in Pyla or actions that strive for the recognition of the pseudostate would be extremely negative for Greek-Turkish dialogue. What we need is not unilateral actions but Confidence Building Measures.
