PM Mitsotakis: Any collaboration of parties based on electoral performance, instead of policy convergence, could lead to political monstrosities

According to all public opinion polls, New Democracy will be the upcoming national elections’ first party, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told ‘Ta Nea’ daily newspaper’s Saturday edition.

In respect of all constitutional protocols, he will then be given the exploratory mandate by the President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, he told journalist Eleni Evangelodimou.

Mitsotakis then emphasized that “the convergence of politicians [their policy] is more important than the sum of parliamentary seats,” and that “such convergences are not formed within three days,” in reference to the available time a party leader is granted to seek the formation of a government in collaboration with another party, should any party fail to formulate a standalone government.

  • Any collaboration based on numbers alone “could also lead to political monstrosities, or governments formed only by losing parties, which could give rise to new [undesired] adventures.”

The only way, therefore, to prevent “such a nightmarish possibility is for New Democracy to emerge very strong from the ballot box on May 21, because this ballot box will determine who will rule.”

Mitsotakis also spoke of his government’s effort to regain the trust of the younger generations, adding that “I ask them to judge us fairly, so that they realize that not everyone is quite the same when it comes to politics, and that as Greece changes, so will their own lives change for the better. This will restore their trust in the political system,” he pointed out.
