The Villa Rossa was Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ first stop while visiting the island of Corfu on Wednesday.

The contract for its remodelling and use as a cultural centre was signed in the summer of 2022 with a budget of 4.8 million euros, with 80% of its financing from European funds and 20% from national funds.

Mitsotakis was guided through the interior and exterior spaces, informed about the progress of the work and the possibilities of utilising the historic building, which was erected in 1864, the same year as the Ionian Islands joined Greece.

“This is a unique landmark that is being given prominence and in two years from now it will be fully usable by the local community,” Mitsotakis underlined.

The prime minister’s next stop was the Archaeological Museum of Corfu, where Culture Minister Lina Mendoni presented the management plan for the two fortresses of the island.

  • “Corfu is a unique living monument of culture and at the same time has the privilege of being designated as a world heritage centre by Unesco since 2007. I am glad that today we have a very thorough study for showcasing and protecting the two monuments. The city of Corfu attracts many visitors and creates a need for its protection,” Mitsotakis emphasised.

Immediately afterward, the prime minister walked about in the square of Spianada where he talked with residents, visitors and business owners.

He then visited the Church of Agios Spyridon, the island’s patron saint, and the Corfu Municipal Gallery.
