Government spokesperson Yiannis Economou on Sunday accused main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance of hypocrisy regarding the wiretapping affair, noting in a statement that main opposition leader Alexis Tsipras had been fully aware that the governor of the national intelligence service (EYP) when he was premier had been in talks to buy surveillance software.

“SYRIZA is selling ‘ethics and morality’ when the former governor of EYP Mr. Roubatis, with the full knowledge of Mr. Tsipras, who until recently claimed ignorance, is alleged to have been in negotiations in the period 2016-2019 for the purchase of surveillance software, even proceeding with a test of Pegasus on Greek phones,” Economou said.

He noted that Roubatis appeared to have collaborated with persons also involved with Predator and that the SYRIZA government had decriminalised the sale, distribution and possession of such software a few days before the 2019 elections.
