12 migrants rescued near Cape Kafireas so far on Wednesday: One dead

Another man was rescued by a vessel in the sea near Cape Kafireas, Evia island, on Wednesday, raising the number of rescued migrants to 12, said the Hellenic Coast Guard.

One man found dead earlier.

They are 6 people from Egypt, 3 from Afghanistan and 3 from Iran.

A large scale search-and-rescue operation was launched after the sinking of a boat carrying 68 migrants, according to the initial statements of the rescued migrants.

Earlier, an open-sea Coast Guard patrol boat had located and collected nine foreign nationals from the rocky islet of Mandilos.

Also participating in the search and rescue operation are a helicopter of the Greek coast guard and two vessels sailing nearby.

Weather conditions in the area are unfavourable, with northerly winds of 7 to 8 Beaufort and wind gusts of up to 9 Beaufort.
