“I wanted to come today to parliament in order to clarify things before the Greek people,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Friday in parliament.

“Despite the generous interventions, electricity rates remain high and the operation of the enterprises has become more stressful, while citizens are concerned ahead of a difficult winter,” Mitsotakis said.

Addressing main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras, he said: “You told us that this international explosion of prices is not the result of the Russians blatant coercion” adding that “the hike in prices has a name and this is Russia’s blackmailing of fossil fuel as an assymetric weapon against Europe.”

Greece defends itself in the best possible way amidst this crisis, he said and added: “With measures and income support. In 2022, the support package is close to 13 billion euros.

Neither I nor any other member of the government has claimed that we have the magic solution, but we are doing our best to limit in a fair manner the drastic negative consequences of this international crisis and we are doing it with targetted measures, without exhausting our national supplies”, Mitsotakis said.

“No country has inexhaustible fiscal possibilities. We will not lead the country to fiscal derailment, this issue has closed forever. The solutions you suggest are leading us there and if you implemented your programme, the country would default in a month.”

“We have already announced a series of measures and I believe they are important,” the prime minister stressed.

He said that the government would not be able to implement them, if high growth rates had not been achieved.

Referring to the increase in diesel, he explained that it is not a Greek phenomenon, but an international issue. Addressing SYRIZA leader, he said: “Let’s discuss realistic solutions to deal with the problem. You are right that the increase in diesel rates has repercussions to the chain supply. We are examining our possibilities and we will see what and if we can announce any measures for the diesel.”
