Two Greeks dead and two injured in clash with Ukrainian soldiers

The Greek foreign ministry on Monday expressed its deep sorrow over the sudden death of two Greek expatriates and the injury of two others in the village Graninta in Ukraine, which is close to the cοntact line at East Ukraine.

“We also convey our sincere condolences to the families of the victims, as well as our wishes for a speedy recovery of the injured,” the foreign ministry’s announcement said.

“According to the available evidence, those responsible for the double homicide are three soldiers of the Ukrainian army, who argued with the Greeks over a trivial cause.”

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias has asked to speak on the phone with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba in order to again point out the need to protect the Greek community in Ukraine.

MeanwhileThe foreign ministry on Monday advised Greek citizens to leave Ukraine immediately, adding that it strongly discourages all travel throughout the country.

According to an announcement by the ministry, a meeting was convened on Monday morning chaired by Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, attended by the Ministers of National Defence Nikos Panagiotopoulos, Minister of Education Niki Kerameus, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andreas Katsaniotis.

“The foreign ministry strongly discourages all travel throughout Ukraine, and at the same time advises Greek citizens in the country to leave the country immediately,” the ministry said in a statement.

“Greek citizens who have not already left are also advised to immediately report their contact details to the Greek Embassy in Kiev.”

It is also pointed out that the staff of the Kiev Embassy have been reduced to those that are necessary. At the same time, the staff of the Consulate General of Mariupol will be strengthened.
