Government must strengthen the NHS practically, says SYRIZA

Almost one year since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in Greece, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis continues to refer to the strengthening of the national health system (NHS) “in the future tense”, said SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance party on Thursday.

The main opposition party added that Mitsotakis “talks about increasing the number of intensive care unit beds, but forgets these need specialized staff, he also talks about hirings but refuses to hire doctors permanently.”

In its statement, Syriza also said that Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias, who briefed parliament on the pandemic on Wednesday, “admitted that the NHS has become a single-disease treatment system, with grave implications for patients suffering from ailments other than Covid-19, who are pushed to private hospitals in order to survive.”
