President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou visited Sotiria hospital, one of the referral hospitals in the fight against Covid-19, on New Year’s Eve, where she met with healthcare staff and noted that the year 2020 and a part of 2021 “belong to these people, the medical and nursing staff that have offered so much, who have helped so much in facing the ordeal that the country and the people are going through.”

This was the reason, she added, why she had chosen to visit the hospital on this day, “even on the terms imposed by the pandemic”.

Hailing the Hellenic Parliament’s donation of ICU beds to the hospital, Sakellaropoulou also noted that “unity and togetherness are something that can only do good for this country and are the strong point of the Greeks.”

In earlier statements for the New Year, meanwhile, the president also express the gratitude of the Greek people to the men and women of the Armed Forces, who guarantee the security of the country in difficult conditions, while talking to members of the military stationed in remote outposts from Gavdos to Evros on the northern border, as well as those currently participating in missions at sea, in the Aegean and Mediterranean.

Sakellaropoulou on Thursday revealed that she has contacted some of the sailors, soldiers and even some Greek emigrants in far away New Zealand, that are currently very far from home to wish them well for the new year.

In a post on one of the presidency’s social media accounts, she noted: “Our thoughts today are with those that are far from their home and their families. I offered my wishes for the New Year to Greek expatriates in New Zealand and members of our armed forces in remote outposts, airplanes and ships, as well as the crews of ocean-going Greek tankers.”
