The first P-3B Orion interim aircraft for the Hellenic Navy’s Maritime Patrol was welcomed on Friday
with an event including the Navy, Lockheed Martin and the Hellenic Aerospace Industry (HAI) at Tanagra, Boeotia.

  • The delivery is part of a United States-Greece defence agreement announced in 2015, which also includes the mid-life upgrade of another four P-3Bs.

Attending the event were civil and defence officials, US Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt, representatives of the two companies and local government officials.

  • National Defence Minister Evangelos Apostolakis said that the Greek national defence forces are being upgraded in ways that take into account the current fiscal challenges, and mentioned the upgrade of F-16s (Viper upgrade programme), frigates and Mirage aircraft, among others.

Greece and the US have “discussed the opportunities that exist to find low-cost solutions to sustain and enhance Greek military capability,” Ambassador Pyatt said. He added that “the Greek defense industry is uniquely positioned to provide material solutions for the country’s national security requirements while at the same time leveraging Greece’s geopolitical relationships and location to once again become a major regional player.”
