Fire burning the Eleftherios Venizelos ferry boat extinguished, authorities investigate for the causes

The fire that had been burning on the “Eleftherios Venizelos” passenger ferry for the last five days has been extinguished, authorities said on Saturday.

The fire broke out on Tuesday night after the ship set sail from Piraeus, possibly due to a short-circuit in one of the vehicles on board. The vessel returned to the port of Piraeus and all 875 passengers on board were evacuated to safety without injury. There were 80 trucks and 152 cars on board the ferry.

Authorities are continuing an investigation into the causes of the fire.
