Greece exits the programme, is back on the right tracks, says German Finance minister

Greece serves as one more proof of the success of the stabilisation mechanisms that the European Union now possesses, German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said while speaking to the European Parliament’s Economic Affairs Committee on Thursday.

Greece was exiting the financial assistance programme and was on the right track, Scholz noted, while its growth was dynamic and it would not need a new programme.

“We are accompanying Greece’s return to the markets and this is done in a framework of confidence,” the German minister said, while stressing the need to stick to the agreed reforms.

“It is important that the agreements are upheld, whatever the government in Greece. It would be a great mistake to change the programme that has been agreed,” he said, though noting that there was some room for flexibility.
