A monthly allowance for the two Greek officers held in Turkey has been approved by the Parliament

Two Greek officers held in jail in Edirne, Turkey, were granted a special monthly allowance through an amendment voted by all parties in parliament on Wednesday.

The two servicemen have been held since early March after entering Turkish territory during a patrol. No charges have been formally announced for the two, who are awaiting trial.

According to the regulation, members of the armed forces who are being held in another country during peacetime are entitled to a special allowance for serving abroad.

The proposal was tabled by junior coalition party member Costas Katsikis (Independent Greeks/ANEL), approved by National Defence Minister Panos Kammenos. It was included in a draft bill ratifying an MoU for defence collaboration between Greece and other European countries.

Kammenos said the regulation helps towards establishing a permanent residence abroad for the two detained men, for Turkish court reasons. “There’s a court case on Friday; I couldn’t leave this issue hanging,” Kammenos said.
In another amendment to the bill, tabled by the National Defence Ministry, Epiros and Macedonia have been added to the areas where servicemen are entitled to the border allowance of 200 euros.
