United Arab Emirates ambassador to Greece defends Arab League offensive to Hodeidah

“The Arab League is conducting a humanitarian operation for the city of Al Hodeidah in order to respond to any humanitarian needs,” the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Greece, Mohammed Mir Al Raisi, said in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA), referring to the Arab League military operations against the Houthi forces, in Yemen’s Al Hodeidah port.

“The liberation operation of the port aims to change the balance of power, which will help to find a political solution,” the UAE ambassador said, adding: “By properly operating the harbour and ensuring that seizures of humanitarian aid from Houthi forces will be avoided, the needs of the Yemeni people will be addressed and a new impetus will be given to a political solution to the Yemeni crisis.”

Asked what is the aim of the military operation against the Houthi forces in Yemen, he said:
“The operations of the Arab League for the liberation of Al Hodeidah are aimed at strengthening the legitimate government of Yemen in order to restore security and stability in the harbour and to reduce the impact of the humanitarian crisis.”

“The intervention of the forces of the Arab League and the military operations in Al-Hodeidah are at the request of the Yemeni government and based on the decisions of the Security Council – Number 2216, 2204, 2201, 2140.”

According to the UAE Ambassador, “Houthi’s forces took advantage of the Al-Hodeidah harbour” and used it “for smuggling weapons and ballistic missiles from Iran to Yemen, targeting Saudi Arabia. Houthis also uses port revenues to fund their military campaigns in Yemen.”
