Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras said in an interview with ANT1 TV on Thursday that it “made sense” for the leaders of the two parties who are “aiming” for first place in the elections and “are being compared” to engage in a televised debate with each other.

Tsipras again accused Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of being “afraid of comparison” and “dialogue” based on the programmes of the two parties, while he recalled that in 2015 he had personally agreed to participate in a debate with his New Democracy rival Evangelos Meimarakis, as was done “in all European countries”.

He also pointed to the example of the last French elections, where Emmanuel Macron had found himself debating “face to face” with Marine Le Pen.

While agreeing that a discussion with all six leaders of the parties in parliament could be held, as proposed by the prime minister, he also noted that such discussions were most often rigid and confusing and, ultimately, not informative.
